In short: most professional roles in the UAE pay between AED 10,000 and AED 40,000 a month, with no personal income tax. A single person needs about AED 18,000 a month in Dubai or AED 17,000 in Abu Dhabi to live comfortably. A family of four with two children in school needs about AED 49,000 in Dubai or AED 48,000 in Abu Dhabi, unless the employer pays for housing and schooling.
Relocate2UAE is an independent information platform, not a recruiter, a law firm or a financial adviser. Salary ranges here come from named recruiter surveys and employer-published pay, and they describe the market, not what any employer will offer you. Legal points are summaries of UAE law as we read it on 8 October 2026. Nothing here is legal, tax or financial advice, and Relocate2UAE accepts no liability for decisions made on it. Legal points were read from the law and from government pages. Every salary range comes from a named recruiter survey, an employer's own careers page or a major newspaper reporting one. The salary tables, market figures and arithmetic were then re-checked against their sources in two separate verification passes on 8 October 2026, and the corrections were applied. A single person needs about AED 18,000 a month to live comfortably in Dubai and about AED 17,000 in Abu Dhabi. A family of four with two children in mid-fee schools needs about AED 49,000 in Dubai and about AED 48,000 in Abu Dhabi. These figures assume the employer pays nothing towards rent or school fees. If your package covers either, the salary you need falls sharply.

Abu Dhabi figures include no health insurance for dependants in the comfortable budgets because the employer must provide it. The premium budget allows for a top-up to a higher tier.
In the Dubai family model, rent is AED 13,333 a month and school fees are AED 8,333. A family whose employer pays both needs roughly AED 24,000 a month in cash salary, not AED 49,000. Always compare total packages, not salaries.
On mid-2026 prices, Abu Dhabi works out only 2% to 5% cheaper than Dubai across the five households. Lower rents are largely offset by school fees that are as high as Dubai's.
An Abu Dhabi employer must pay health insurance for your spouse and up to three children under 18. A Dubai employer only has to insure you. Abu Dhabi also froze rent increases on renewal at 0% from 2 June 2026.
Dubai consumer prices were 5.54% higher in August 2026 than a year before. Over the year to June 2026 the average wage paid through the Wages Protection System fell 2.3%. A salary that was comfortable in 2025 buys less now.
Don't rely on these numbers without checking. Rents here are mostly advertised asking rents, which run above what tenants actually sign for, and both cities moved quickly in 2026. School fees vary more than any other line. Price your own school and your own community before you accept an offer. Our UAE Cost of Living Guide has the line-by-line detail.
| Scenario | Monthly cost you pay | Cash salary needed |

| Lower-fee schools at 25,000 per child | 37,667 | 44,000 |
| Two-bedroom apartment (110,000) and lower-fee schools | 33,292 | 39,000 |

| Employer pays rent | 28,500 | 34,000 |

A good salary in the UAE is one that covers a mid-market life for your household with about 15% left to save. For a single professional that starts at around AED 18,000 a month. For a family paying its own rent and school fees it starts at around AED 45,000 to 50,000. Below those levels life is workable but tight. Well above them, the UAE becomes one of the best places in the world to build savings, because nothing is deducted for income tax.
No official body publishes an average or median salary for the UAE. Figures quoted online, such as "the average UAE salary is AED 16,000", trace back to crowd-sourced websites and are not reliable. The best available benchmark is the spread of roles in recruiter guides.
| Monthly salary (AED) | What it means in practice | Reference point |
|---|---|---|
| Under 4,000 | Below the level needed to sponsor a family. Usually with shared, employer-provided accommodation. | [OFFICIAL] Sponsorship floor is 4,000, or 3,000 plus accommodation |
| 4,000 to 10,000 | Entry-level and junior roles. A single person can live on it by sharing a home. | [OFFICIAL] 4,000 is also the minimum for a "skilled" work permit classification |
| 10,000 to 18,000 | Early-career professional. Comfortable when sharing, or lean in your own studio. | [MARKET] Bottom of the main 10,000 to 40,000 band |

| 30,000 to 50,000 | A good salary for a couple. Workable for a family only with employer housing or school support. Golden Visa threshold at 30,000. | [OFFICIAL] ICP |
| 50,000 to 70,000 | A good family salary without employer support. Senior manager and director level. | Our model, section 1 |

What the recruiter data says. Michael Page's 2026 UAE guide covers more than 500 professional roles. Over 60% pay between AED 10,000 and AED 40,000 a month. Average pay by sector runs from AED 16,550 in secretarial and office support to AED 53,020 in banking and financial services. The lowest role average in the guide is a retail sales associate at AED 7,000. These are white-collar roles, not the whole workforce. [MARKET] Michael Page UAE Salary Guide 2026, analysed by The National.
The wider workforce earns far less. The last official wage distribution for Dubai, from the Dubai Statistics Centre's 2017 labour force survey, found that 47% of employed people earned under AED 2,500 a month and 77% earned under AED 10,000. It is dated, but it is a reminder that the ranges in this guide describe professional roles. [OFFICIAL] Dubai Statistics Centre, dated.
Compare it with home properly. A UAE salary has no income tax taken off, but you pay for things a home-country salary may include: private schooling, health insurance for dependants in Dubai, and no state pension. Your home country may also still tax you. See our UAE Taxation Guide.
A UAE salary is normally split into a basic salary plus allowances for housing, transport and other items. The split matters because end-of-service gratuity, overtime, unused leave on exit and unemployment insurance are all calculated on basic salary alone. Two offers with the same monthly total can be worth very different amounts over five years.
UAE labour law defines two terms. Basic wage is the pay set in the contract for the work, excluding all allowances. Wage is basic wage plus cash allowances and benefits in kind. [LAW] Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021, Art. 1.
| Entitlement | Calculated on | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| End-of-service gratuity | Basic wage | [LAW] Art. 51 |
| Overtime | Basic wage plus 25%, or plus 50% between 10pm and 4am | [LAW] Art. 19 |
| Unused annual leave paid out when you leave | Basic wage | [LAW] Cabinet Resolution 1 of 2022, Art. 19(2) |

Two offers of AED 30,000 a month, held for five years:
| Offer A | Offer B | |
|---|---|---|
| Basic salary | 12,000 (40% of total) | 20,000 (67% of total) |
| Allowances | 18,000 | 10,000 |
| Monthly total | 30,000 | 30,000 |
| Gratuity after five years | 42,000 | 70,000 |
| ILOE payout if made redundant (60% of basic, per month) | 7,200 | 12,000 |
Offer B is worth AED 28,000 more at the end of five years, with identical take-home pay.
How big is basic, typically? There is no legal ratio in mainland UAE and no market-wide survey of the split. One 2026 guide, from a recruiter specialising in risk and governance, says base salary is typically 60% to 65% of the total package in the Middle East. In the DIFC and ADGM financial free zones, basic wage is treated as at least 50% of total pay when end-of-service benefits are calculated. [MARKET] Barclay Simpson 2026 Middle East Salary Guide; [OFFICIAL] ADGM Employment Regulations 2024 guidance.
Ask this before you sign. "What is the basic salary, in dirhams, as it will appear on my MOHRE or free zone contract?" If the answer is under half of the monthly total, it is reasonable to ask for the split to be changed. It adds nothing to the monthly payroll, although it does raise the employer's end-of-service liability.
The main benefits guaranteed by law are end-of-service gratuity, health insurance for you, paid leave, and a ticket home when the job ends. A separate housing allowance, school fees and annual flights are contractual: you get them only if they are written into your offer.
| Benefit | Required by law? | The rule |
|---|---|---|
| End-of-service gratuity | Yes | 21 days' basic per year for five years, then 30 days. [LAW] Art. 51 |
| Health insurance for the employee | Yes, in every emirate | Employer pays and cannot deduct the cost. [LAW] Dubai Law 11 of 2013; Abu Dhabi Law 23 of 2005 |
| Health insurance for dependants | Abu Dhabi only | One spouse and up to three children under 18. Elsewhere it is the sponsor's cost. |
| Annual leave | Yes | 30 days a year. [LAW] Art. 29 |
| Repatriation ticket at the end | Yes | Employer bears the cost of returning you, unless you join another employer. [LAW] Art. 13(12) |
| Housing | Partly | The employer must provide accommodation, pay a housing allowance, or include housing in the wage. [LAW] Art. 13(4) |
| Annual flights home | No | Contractual |
| School fees | No | Contractual |
| Bonus | No | Contractual or discretionary |
| Pension | No, for expatriates | Gratuity replaces it. Pensions apply to UAE and GCC nationals. [LAW] Art. 51(1) |
About 70% of UAE employers still pay housing as a separate allowance and 25% have rolled it into salary. Housing allowances rose 4% on average between 2024 and 2025, and 52% of employers pay it upfront, which helps with rent cheques. [MARKET] Mercer Middle East Housing and Schooling Report 2025.
Published examples show the range. Emirates values the accommodation it gives pilots at AED 225,000 a year for a first officer and AED 290,000 for a captain. Teachers typically receive accommodation or AED 60,000 to 150,000 a year. [MARKET] Emirates Group Careers; Teacher Horizons, August 2026.
89% of UAE employers that Mercer surveyed give some schooling support. Across the Gulf excluding Saudi Arabia, 64% vary it by seniority or other criteria, and 19% of organisations updated their schooling support in 2025. Where it exists, it is usually capped per child and limited to two or three children.
| Published employer cap | Primary, per child per year | Secondary, per child per year | Children covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emirates (pilots) | AED 52,250 | AED 79,750 | Up to three |
| Etihad (pilots) | Up to AED 40,000 | Up to AED 55,000 | Up to three |
Set any cap against real fees. Mid-tier Dubai schools charge AED 35,000 to 60,000 a year and premium schools AED 55,000 to 95,000 or more, plus 10% to 25% in extras. Dubai's regulator froze tuition increases for 2026/27. [REPORTED] Khaleej Times, August 2026; KHDA.
| Emirate | Employer must cover | What that leaves you to pay |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | The employee only | Cover for your spouse and children. A basic dependant plan starts around AED 650 a year. A mid-tier plan for a family of four is about AED 6,800 a year. |
| Abu Dhabi | The employee, one spouse and up to three children under 18 | Usually nothing, unless you want a higher tier |
| Sharjah and the Northern Emirates | The employee, on a basic plan from AED 320 a year (mandatory since 1 January 2025) | Dependants, at the same basic price if you choose |
The legal minimum is a floor. Ask which insurer, which network, and whether maternity, dental and cover outside the UAE are included. Our UAE Healthcare and Health Insurance Guide explains the tiers.
Gratuity is a lump sum paid when you leave a job after at least one year. It is 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after that, capped at two years' wage. It is paid whether you resign or are dismissed, and it must reach you within 14 days of your last day. [LAW] Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021, Art. 51 and 53. In practice a day's pay is monthly basic salary divided by 30.
| Basic salary (AED a month) | 3 years | 5 years | 7 years | 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | 21,000 | 35,000 | 55,000 | 85,000 |

77% of UAE employers are paying a bonus in 2026, up from 72% the previous year. Across all employers surveyed, 36% pay one to two months' salary, 26% pay three to five months, and 7% pay six months or more. In financial services, fintech, sales and trading, bonuses commonly run from 10% to 40% of annual basic. [MARKET] Cooper Fitch 2026 UAE Bonus Report. A bonus is only as good as its wording. "Discretionary" means the employer can pay nothing.
Private-sector and federal government employees must subscribe, with a few exemptions such as business owners and domestic workers. It costs AED 5 a month plus VAT if your basic salary is AED 16,000 or less and AED 10 a month above that. If you lose your job other than by resigning or for misconduct, it pays 60% of your average basic salary for up to three months, capped at AED 10,000 or AED 20,000 a month. You need 12 consecutive months of subscription before you can claim. [OFFICIAL] iloe.ae.
UAE packages come in three shapes: an all-in salary with no separate benefits, a salary with itemised cash allowances, and a full expat package where the employer provides housing, schooling and flights in kind. All-in salaries are now the norm for most professional hires, and new arrivals without Gulf experience tend to be offered leaner packages.
| Package shape | What you get | Common in | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-in (consolidated) | One monthly figure, split into basic and allowances on paper. Health insurance for you. Often one annual flight. | Most private-sector professional roles, technology, sales, start-ups | The basic split, dependant insurance, whether the figure covers real rent and school costs |
| Itemised allowances | Basic plus named cash allowances for housing, transport, schooling and flights | Banks, multinationals, government-related entities | Caps, what happens to allowances on promotion or redundancy, upfront housing clawback |
| Full expat (benefits in kind) | Employer-provided home, school fees paid direct, family flights, family medical | Airlines, teaching, healthcare, energy, senior executives | The cash element is small, so gratuity and your ability to save cash are lower than the headline suggests |
Cooper Fitch's chief executive said in November 2025 that candidates without Gulf experience are "likely to come in on leaner packages". Recruiters also reported some firms restoring family benefits, schooling allowances and better medical cover to keep staff, rather than raising base pay. [REPORTED] The National, 25 November 2025; Khaleej Times, 26 November 2025.
These are the clearest public examples because the employers publish the numbers themselves.
| Role | Monthly cash | What sits on top | Stated total package |

| flydubai captain | AED 50,235 fixed, plus about AED 16,310 average flying pay | Education assistance, 42 days' leave | Not stated |
| Etihad first officer (A320) | Up to AED 513,732 a year including housing and flying pay | Education allowance up to AED 40,000 and 55,000 per child | Included |
| International school teacher | AED 9,000 to 15,000 | Housing or AED 60,000 to 150,000 a year, annual flight, medical, reduced or free school places | Not stated |

In Hays' GCC Salary Guide 2025, flights or a travel allowance were the benefit most commonly offered by Gulf employers (63%), ahead of private medical cover (51%) and a child education allowance (39%), not counting allowances already inside the fixed monthly package. In its 2026 guide, employees ranked a child education allowance, extra leave and flexible working as the benefits they value most. [MARKET] Hays GCC Salary Guide 2025 and 2026.
Chief executives in the UAE typically earn AED 60,000 to 180,000 a month in base pay outside banking, and from AED 180,000 to as much as AED 600,000 in banking. Other C-suite roles mostly fall between AED 70,000 and AED 200,000, and higher in construction and property. At this level the annual bonus and long-term incentives often matter as much as the salary.

Bonus and long-term incentives. More than 80% of UAE chief executives received an annual bonus, most often one to three months' salary. 35% have a long-term incentive plan, against 57% in Saudi Arabia. Listed UAE companies offer long-term incentives worth 12 to 24 months of basic salary, usually vesting over three to five years. Private companies generally offer less. [MARKET] Cooper Fitch 2025 CEO Report.
Executives should also check: the notice period (three to six months is common, though statute caps it at 90 days), garden leave, the non-compete, good-leaver and bad-leaver terms on unvested awards, and whether a second, offshore contract is proposed. These points are worth a lawyer's time.
UAE pay growth slowed in 2026. Forecasts ranged from 1.6% to 4.1%, surveyed pay rises averaged 3.4%, and one leading recruiter said in July that it expected no growth for the year. The projection for 2027 is 3.3%.

Why the forecasts differ. Cooper Fitch's figure comes from its own employer survey. Korn Ferry's draws on a rewards database of large organisations. Neither is wrong; they measure different things. Taken with the mid-year slowdown, read them as a range of roughly 0% to 4%.
What happened during the year. The 2026 salary guides were all compiled in late 2025. Recruiters then reported a sharp drop in hiring across the Gulf in March 2026 linked to regional conflict, a rebound in April after a ceasefire, and a weak second quarter in the UAE. In July, Cooper Fitch's chief executive told Khaleej Times: "There'll be no growth this year." Adecco described 2026 as "a year of moderation and disciplined salary growth". [REPORTED] Khaleej Times, 2026.
Where demand held up. Investment management, finance, data and artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity hiring grew in the second quarter of 2026. Software, cloud, sales and marketing, legal, HR and supply chain hiring fell. Charterhouse describes mandates as "more technical and niche", led by data centres, family offices, fintech and AI. What it means for you: employers have more choice than in 2023 or 2024, so the ranges below are ceilings as often as they are midpoints. The biggest pay rises now come from changing employer or holding a scarce skill, not from annual reviews.
How to read these tables. Figures are monthly pay in AED, before bonus, school fees, flights or gratuity. The two main guides define pay differently. Charterhouse reports gross monthly fixed pay: basic salary plus housing and transport allowances. Robert Walters reports monthly salary "exclusive of benefits and bonuses". Treat every range as monthly cash before benefits. Sources are coded: RW is the Robert Walters Middle East Salary Survey 2026, CH is the Charterhouse UAE Salary Guide 2026, MP is the Michael Page UAE Salary Guide 2026, and Hays 25 is the Hays GCC Salary Guide 2025.

University faculty. Most UAE universities do not publish pay. One that does is the University of Dubai, whose 2024/25 policy manual sets these all-inclusive monthly scales (housing, education and travel allowances are inside the figure; medical insurance is extra): Lecturer 20,000 to 25,000; Senior lecturer 25,000 to 30,000; Assistant professor 30,000 to 35,000; Associate professor 35,000 to 40,000; Professor 40,000 to 45,000. Many doctors are paid a base salary plus a share of the revenue they generate, so base figures understate earnings for busy specialists. Ask for the revenue-share formula in writing. Nursing packages usually include accommodation or a housing allowance, an annual flight and medical cover.

The rules. In the federal government, non-nationals may be appointed only where no qualified citizen is available. Abu Dhabi's 2026 government HR rules say the same and require approval for each appointment. Sovereign funds, national energy and utility companies, airlines and government-owned developers hire many expatriates. They tend to offer itemised packages, longer leave and stronger family benefits than the private sector.

Airline pay comes with training bonds. flydubai's are USD 24,000 to 36,000 over three years for pilots. Hospitality is the one major sector with no current, credible salary survey we could read. The last newspaper figures, from 2023, put restaurant managers and head chefs at AED 16,000 to 22,000 a month, and waiting and front-desk staff at AED 2,800 to 3,500. Entry-level hotel roles normally include shared accommodation, meals on duty, transport and a share of service charge.

Employers do not publish different pay scales for each emirate, and no official body publishes average wages by emirate. Dubai and Abu Dhabi pay similar salaries for the same private-sector role. Salaries in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates are generally lower, but so are rents.
| Emirate | Where the jobs are | Pay pattern | Cost marker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai | Finance (DIFC), technology, trade and logistics, aviation, tourism, real estate, professional services | The widest range of employers and the reference point for every recruiter guide | One-bedroom asking rent: 79,000 in JVC, 104,000 in Business Bay |
| Abu Dhabi | Energy, sovereign wealth and asset management (ADGM), government, defence, healthcare | Similar private-sector pay to Dubai. More government-related employers with itemised family benefits. Employer must insure your spouse and children. | One-bedroom asking rent: 59,000 in Khalifa City, 94,000 on Al Reem Island |
| Sharjah | Education, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare. Many residents commute to Dubai. | Generally lower for the same title | Average apartment asking rent: about 26,500 in Al Nabba to 68,200 in Al Mamzar |
| Ajman | Manufacturing, trading, small business | Lower | About AED 31 per square foot a year, up 8.8% |
| Ras Al Khaimah | Manufacturing, tourism and hospitality, with a large resort pipeline | Lower, rising for hospitality and construction | About AED 57 per square foot a year, up 10% |

Your monthly salary decides which visas you can hold and who you can sponsor. The main thresholds are AED 4,000 to sponsor a spouse and children, AED 10,000 to sponsor parents in Dubai, AED 15,000 for a Green Visa, AED 25,000 of household income to sponsor a domestic worker, and AED 30,000 for a Golden Visa as a skilled professional.

Golden Visa: basic or total? The official ICP and Dubai GDRFA pages say only "a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000". Immigration firm Fragomen told The National in March 2025 that the test is gross monthly salary including fixed allowances. GDRFA also asks for six months of bank statements showing the salary arriving. We found no official statement for 2026. [REPORTED]
Sponsoring parents. Dubai's GDRFA service page asks for a salary certificate showing at least AED 10,000 a month, a tenancy contract suited to the size of the family and a refundable guarantee of AED 5,000 per application. For the other emirates, ICP publishes no figure. [OFFICIAL] GDRFA for Dubai; [VERIFY] elsewhere.

Private-sector salaries in the UAE must be paid through the Wages Protection System, and from 1 June 2026 they are due on the 1st of the month for the month just worked. When you leave, all wages and end-of-service entitlements must be paid within 14 days.
A salary account is usually your first UAE bank account, and banks set account tiers and lending by the salary transferred. See our UAE Banking Guide.
Judge a UAE offer by its total annual value and by what is left after rent and school fees, not by the monthly headline. Then negotiate the items that cost the employer least: the basic salary split, the timing of the housing allowance, and benefits for your family.
| Ask | Why it works |
|---|---|
| A higher basic share of the same total | No change to the monthly payroll. Raises your gratuity and insurance cover. |
| Housing allowance paid upfront | Rent is paid in one to four cheques. This saves you a loan. |
| Family medical cover (Dubai and the Northern Emirates) | Cheap for an employer on a group policy, expensive for you individually |
| School fee support, even partial | Your largest cost after rent, and the benefit employees value most |
| Relocation costs and one month of temporary housing | A one-off cost that is easy to approve |
| A guaranteed first-year bonus or sign-on | Covers the bonus you forfeit by leaving your current job |
| More base salary | The hardest ask in the 2026 market. Bring a named benchmark. |
Warning signs: an employer who will not put the offer in writing before you resign, a basic salary far below half of the total, a contract salary lower than the offer letter, a request that you pay for your own recruitment or work permit (the law puts those costs on the employer), or pressure to start on a visit visa.
| Change | Date | What it means for your pay |
|---|---|---|
| Salaries due on the 1st of the month, with no grace period | 1 June 2026 | Faster, more predictable pay. Tougher penalties for late payers. [REPORTED] |
| Minimum salary for Emiratis raised to AED 6,000 | 1 January 2026, enforced from 1 July 2026 | No direct effect on expatriate pay. [OFFICIAL] |
| Abu Dhabi rent increases frozen at 0% on renewal | 2 June 2026 | Protects sitting tenants in Abu Dhabi. [REPORTED] |
| Dubai school tuition frozen for 2026/27 | Announced 22 May 2026 | No tuition rise this year. Bus and other fees can still rise. [REPORTED] |
| VAT added to Salik road tolls | 1 June 2026 | Peak toll now AED 6.30. [REPORTED] |
| Fuel prices up sharply | October 2026: Super 98 at AED 4.40 a litre | Pump prices are about 22% higher than in August. [REPORTED] |
| Hiring slowdown | March to June 2026 | Fewer and smaller pay rises. More negotiating power for employers. [MARKET] |
| ADGM Employment Regulations 2024 in force | 1 April 2025 | New leave, notice and end-of-service terms for ADGM employees. [OFFICIAL] |
| Savings Scheme guidance updated; still voluntary | November 2025 | Gratuity remains the default. [REPORTED] |
What did not change: the gratuity formula, the absence of personal income tax, the AED 4,000 family sponsorship threshold and the AED 30,000 Golden Visa threshold. We found no amendment to the main labour law in 2025 or 2026. Websites announcing a "new UAE labour law 2026" are not describing a real change to pay rules.
A good salary in Dubai is about AED 18,000 a month or more for a single person, AED 27,000 for a couple and AED 49,000 for a family of four paying its own rent and school fees. Those levels cover a mid-market lifestyle with about 15% left to save. If your employer pays for housing or schooling, a lower cash salary gives the same standard of living.
About AED 17,000 a month for a single person, AED 25,000 for a couple and AED 48,000 for a family of four with two children in mid-fee schools. Abu Dhabi works out only 2% to 5% cheaper than Dubai on mid-2026 prices. Its bigger advantage is that employers must pay health insurance for your spouse and up to three children.
It is a modest but liveable salary for a single person. AED 10,000 is enough to live carefully, usually in a studio in a value community or a shared apartment, using public transport. It is above the level needed to sponsor a spouse and children, but it is not enough to support a family in Dubai or Abu Dhabi without employer-provided housing.
Yes, for a single person or a couple. It covers a one-bedroom apartment in a mid-market area, a car and regular saving. It qualifies you for a Green Visa if you hold a degree. It is tight for a family unless the employer covers rent or school fees.
It is workable but tight if you pay your own rent and school fees: our model puts a comfortable family budget at about AED 41,800 a month. AED 30,000 works well if your employer provides housing or pays school fees, or if you live in Sharjah or a lower-rent Dubai community and choose lower-fee schools.
Yes. The UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, so your salary is paid without deductions for income tax or social security. Your home country may still tax you if you remain tax resident there, and US citizens are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live. There is 5% VAT on most spending.
No official body publishes one. The best available guide is recruiter data: more than 60% of professional roles in Michael Page's 2026 UAE guide pay AED 10,000 to 40,000 a month, with sector averages from AED 16,550 in office support to AED 53,020 in banking. Averages quoted on crowd-sourced websites are unreliable.
Not for expatriates. The labour law lets the Cabinet set one, but it has not done so. Emiratis working in the private sector must be paid at least AED 6,000 a month from 1 January 2026. Separately, AED 4,000 a month is the level for skilled-worker classification and, unless your employer provides accommodation, for sponsoring your family.
Basic salary is the core pay named in your contract. Total salary adds allowances for housing, transport and other items. End-of-service gratuity, overtime and unemployment insurance are calculated on basic salary only, so a higher basic share makes the same monthly total worth more over time.
You receive 21 days of basic salary for each of your first five years and 30 days for each year after that, once you have completed one year. A day's pay is monthly basic divided by 30. On a basic salary of AED 15,000, five years gives AED 52,500. The total is capped at two years' wage.
No. The law requires the employer to provide accommodation, pay a housing allowance or include housing in your wage, and most professional contracts state it is included. A separate housing allowance is a contractual benefit. About 70% of UAE employers surveyed by Mercer still pay one.
Some do, but it is not a legal requirement. It is most common at large multinationals, airlines, energy companies and for senior roles, and is usually capped per child. Teachers often get reduced or free places at their own school. Always check the cap against the fees of the school you want.
In Abu Dhabi, yes: the employer must insure you, one spouse and up to three children under 18. In Dubai and the other emirates the employer must insure only you, and you are responsible for your dependants unless your contract says otherwise.
No. An annual ticket home is a common contractual benefit but not a statutory one. The law only requires the employer to pay for your return home when your employment ends, unless you move to another employer or were dismissed for a reason you caused.
Korn Ferry's mid-2026 survey projects an average rise of 3.3% for 2027, with executives at a median of 4.0%. Pay rises in 2026 averaged 3.4% in the same survey, though hiring fell in the second quarter and some recruiters expected little real growth. With Dubai inflation above 5%, most pay rises have not kept pace with prices.
Not by much for the same private-sector job, and recruiter guides publish one set of UAE ranges. The differences are in the employers: Abu Dhabi has more government-related organisations with itemised family benefits, and Dubai has a broader private sector. Salaries in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates are generally lower.
AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation provided by your employer, to sponsor a spouse and children. Sponsoring parents in Dubai needs AED 10,000 a month, a suitable tenancy and a refundable guarantee. Sponsoring a domestic worker needs a household income of AED 25,000.
Banking and financial services has the highest average pay. The best-paid roles are bank chief executives (up to AED 600,000 a month), law firm partners (up to about AED 200,000), chief information officers (up to AED 200,000), hedge fund and private equity leaders, and surgeons. Among published packages, an Emirates captain's is valued at AED 1,185,000 a year.

How this guide was built. Legal points were read from the text of the law or from government pages on 8 October 2026. Salary ranges come only from named recruiter surveys, employer careers pages and major newspapers reporting those sources. We did not use crowd-sourced salary websites, visa agency blogs or unattributed lists. Where we could not find a credible figure we have said so instead of filling the gap. The salary tables, market figures and arithmetic were re-checked against their sources in two separate verification passes, and the corrections were applied before publication.
